Market Rasen Home Care : A Case Study

A customer of Quality Home Care living in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire has recently been diagnosed with Dementia at the age of 55.
In order to help others who maybe in a similar position we asked him if we could post his reaction to the diagnosis and advice he may have to help others in a similar position.

“My first reaction was one of shock and disbelief as nothing prepares you, to be given a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. I was devastated and became withdrawn as I went through a grieving process, then I began to realise I was still me, and I began to accept the diagnosis.”
“Having confidence in yourself is essential to get through this and you need to take charge of your life again. Build up your hobbies and interests, take up all the things you did before. Don’t allow yourself to be consumed by dementia. I can still do many things I did before. Some I need a little help with, and if so, I will ask. Be as independent as you can. Don’t let people undermine you, to fit someone’s tick box.”
“People look at you almost with disbelief, as if to say ‘Well you can’t possibly have dementia, you’re not old’. And that’s unfortunately the perception in society, which is getting better but people still perceive it to be an old person’s disease.
“They just picture their grandparents or whatever or they picture somebody, maybe, away, not a lot away but out of society, sitting in the corner with nothing to say which certainly isn’t the case if you have young onset dementia. I still have a voice and I am still very active in Market Rasen to put that voice out there. But people just don’t believe that it’s possible for you to have dementia when you’re young.”
Of course many older people are also diagnosed with dementia and Market Rasen has a higher than average number of people over the age of 75, and accordingly has a slightly higher increase in the number of people with dementia.
